Denver Named One of the top 15 Most Sustainable U.S. Cities

Denver has been ranked number nine in the top 15 most sustainable U.S. cities by Smarter Cities, a project of the Natural Resources Defense Council.
According to this survey, Coloradans have earned our spot at number nine due to:
- Excellent water conservation
- Reliance on natural landscape and resources
- the Mile High Million program to plant a million trees
- Xcel’s use of the city’s access to wind, solar and geothermal energy (including a plan for 20 percent of the city’s electricity to come from wind power by 2020)
- “Coloradans understand the value of water in their semi-arid state,” and commends Denver residents in their efforts to preserve the resource
- Denver Recycles implemented pilot program for composting
- The Freewheelin bike-sharing program, created by Humana Health Care
- The not-for-profit organization Bikes Belong
