Senator Blanche Lincoln shared her version of the Child Nutrition Act yesterday – and announced that the Senate Agriculture Committee will begin working with the bill next Wednesday.
Senator Lincoln’s bill increases funding for child nutrition programs by $500 million per year, highlights stronger nutritional standards and supports Farm to School programs.
Although it is a step in the right direction, it is still only half as much as President Obama proposed and is most likely, too slim to transform school lunch programs that are making American children anything but.
What can we do about it? Well – if your Senator happens to be part of the Agriculture Committee, you have the opportunity to make an impact, but you have to do it SOON.
Here is what YOU can do:
Call your Senator’s office in Washington D.C. and urge them to support:
• Helping schools serve better, and more nutritional meals by making the full investment of $1 billion per year for our country’s child nutrition programs.
• Insist they include $50 million for Farm to School programs. These link schools to local farms and support local economy.
After making the call, speak with everyone you know – especially parents, teachers and school lunchroom staff. Ask them to make the call as well.
With the help of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative, and full funding for the Child Nutrition Act, there is great hope for igniting a fair fight against childhood obesity in the US.
Help make a difference that matters. Make the call and take a stand against obesity today.
